We helped IDION develop and launch a revolutionary solution that enables their unique Shield® technology and cloud-based platform to securely communicate with hospital data systems.
IDION’s healthcare mission is to transform the patient experience by replacing traditional hospital wristbands with a skin-adhered patient ID Shield®. To realize this vision, they needed custom software to integrate the hospitals’ electronic medical records system with IDION’s cloud platform. This would enable custom Shields®; to be printed on patient arrival. Hospitals could then provide ongoing care through the Shield®, streamlining outdated processes.
Whitespectre first began working with IDION in 2018 to create a unified data platform, adaptable for multiple verticals. To build their healthcare solution, we extended the platform and provided technical leadership throughout the HIPAA-compliance process, security audits, and hospital trials. Whitespectre’s CEO Nick Tudor acted as IDION’s interim CTO, bringing decades of experience to this enterprise-level integration.
As of early 2020, IDION’s Patient ID Shield® has been integrated into a large hospital
system in New York City and a pediatric hospital system elsewhere in the US, with plans to expand in the
near future. Both the hospital partners and IDION believe that this is the first instance in the US where
a software solution enables printing from an outside cloud platform directly into the hospital premises.
To support continued growth and expansion, Whitespectre is working with IDION on innovative
enhancements to the Patient ID Shield® for at-home care. The new prototype aims to change the Shield®
behavior upon the patient's discharge, enabling them to get real-time feedback and access their protected
data from home.
Despite its technical complexity and stringent data security requirements, this new
patient ID solution needed to be simple to use for both patients and healthcare teams.
To meet
this challenge, Whitespectre wrote custom software to integrate the hospitals’ physical printers with
IDION’s cloud platform. Upon registration, the patient’s information is entered into the IDION’s platform
and transmitted to a non-transferrable Shield® that is applied to the patient’s skin. Through a
progressive web app, healthcare teams can choose which patient’s information to print and which printer to
use.
IDION believe that this is the first instance in the US where a software solution enables printing from an outside cloud platform directly into the hospital premises.

Whitespectre was able to effectively navigate the complexities of working with large hospital IT teams, inspiring confidence from our partners and making sure the cloud-based solution they built for us met hospital security standards and HIPAA compliance. Their leadership and guidance was critical for us being able to launch our trials. As partners, they’ve embraced our longer term vision and continue to work with us on building towards that.”
